The historic capital, Stone Town, with its free port is where music legend Freddy Mercury was born. The island is the only region where the Zanzibar colobus, also known as the red colobus monkey, occurs. Together with the nearby island of Pemba, the island forms the semi-autonomous state of Zanzibar. The islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia are also known as the Spice Islands.
